Bridges is an organization in Summit, NJ, that feeds the poor on the streets of New York City, Newark, and Irvington.
Bridges accomplishes this task with the help of other organizations that make sandwich-lunches, and who go on the runs to actually hand out the food – as well as other needed items.
At Corpus Christi, we participate in 4 – 6 runs each year. We take up a collections in September and February, in order to pay for the food. We gather a few hours before each run, to make sandwiches, and pack 300 brown bag meals. We pack it all up in cars, and travel first to the Bridges home site in Summit. We help them load the truck, and then we travel into the city on the schedule for that day or night.
There are about 10 teens on each run, and several parents who drive and chaperone. These events are coordinated by high school juniors and seniors in the parish, parent coordinators, and Bridges.
All places provide an opportunity for teens to come face to face with the people we serve, give to them, and share stories with them.
